Silverton - Communities of the Slocan Valley

Silverton, population about 250, is BC’s smallest municipality. It sits on the shores of Slocan Lake just 5kms (3 miles) or a short bike ride south of New Denver. Like most other Slocan Valley towns, Silverton started as a silver mining community in the early 1890’s. Many old buildings survive and are still use, and the village has done a great job of restoring and beautifying its buildings.

You can’t miss noticing the Silverton Gallery and Mining Museum right in town on Highway 6, as the Museum is surrounded by original mining equipment salvaged from the mines. Local artists display inside the Silverton Gallery, which was originally a schoolhouse. Theatre productions take place there on a regular basis.

The Memorial Hall (circa 1919, built entirely by volunteers in honour of those who gave their lives in WWI) is said to have some of the finest acoustics of any similar hall in Canada, and is popular for concerts and weddings.

Campers enjoy the 15 site lakeside campground. The Day Park is perfect for a picnic of delectables picked up from a number of cafes, restaurants and a grocery in town. Dewis Park has an adventure playground, a tennis court and ball field, picnic tables, water taps and washrooms.
