* A lovely ham roast from White Crow Farm and other locally grown offerings

If you have something you would like to offer at the silent auction (a service, gift certificate, art, a re-gift that you know others would snap up) … please drop us a line at info@vallicanwhole.com  or call Gary at 250-226-6979. It also is a great way to advertise your new business!

Community Investment Series- New Denver @ Knox Hall
Feb 8 @ 9:00 am – 10:30 am

Community Impact Investing is the process of connecting local investors to local investment opportunities. While the demand for investing locally is increasing, traditional options available to investors limit where they can invest. The result is that most local investment capital leaves our community and is invested into far off stock markets and corporations. An unintended consequence is that while our investments create significant jobs and wealth elsewhere, the places we live, work and play are overlooked.

Eden Yesh – Invermere Branch Manager for Kootenay Employment Services (KES), consultant to the Creston & District Community Investment Co-op and Chair of the BC Community Impact Investment Coalition – will host Community Investment sessions in most communities throughout the Kootenays. These sessions will highlight examples of how local investment vehicles have successfully met community needs across Canada, such as; affordable housing, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and food production, locally-owned small business, technology, and community economic development projects.

The purpose of these sessions are to discuss the local investment movement in BC and the opportunity to establish two new Community Investment Co-ops in Southeastern BC in 2018. The year-long initiative will be facilitated by Eden and funded in part by the Province, Kootenay Employment Services and the BC Rural Centre.

Not Extinct: Keeping the Sinixt Way
Many years in the making, this book written by Marilyn James and Taress Alexis is part of a multi-pronged project by the Blood of Life Collective.

For over a year, Blood of Life Collective members gathered to listen to and record Sinixt storytellers and knowledge-keepers James and Alexis telling the stories of the Sinixt oral history. They were entertained week after week by the antics of the trickster Coyote – and the goings-on of the other animal beings who people these stories.

These traditional stories as well as a few contemporary ones form the backbone of the book.

Full-page colour and black and white illustrations by 17 different regional artists help illuminate the Sinixt ancestral and contemporary relationship with the land and waters of the Upper Columbia River watershed.

Each chapter is rounded out by a reflection on the story and/or discussion by one of 10 settler authors. The illustrations and reflections by these contributors give readers further opportunities to engage with the stories.
