Springer Creek Canyon: Worth Protecting!
With the generous assistance of the Mapping Support Program of the Columbia
Basin Watershed Network, and in collaboration with the Selkirk College
Geospatial Research Center, Springer Creek Restoration and Preservation
Alliance (SCRAPA) has recently mapped approximately 30 km of recreation
trails in the lower Springer Creek watershed. These trails, easily accessed from
Highway 6 and the Village of Slocan, vary from easy walking to extremely
challenging hiking; near the Creek some require particular caution.
SLOCAN VALLEY SENIORS HOUSING SURVEY LAUNCHED
The Slocan Valley Seniors’ Housing Society (SVSHS) is a non-profit, charitable society established in 1995 to address seniors’ housing and support needs in the Slocan Valley. We are conducting a study from Summit Lake to the Hwy 3 Junction to determine the extent of the need and demand for seniors’ housing in the Valley. (50 years +)
We want a better understanding of seniors’ housing needs, and what housing and services seniors would like to see in the Valley. We have inserted a paper survey in the Feb. 25th issue of the Valley Voice, but if you prefer to do it online, use the link below. Please forward this link to any friends or neighbours you think might be interested. The survey takes about 5 to 10 minutes to fill out. Please answer all questions. All completed surveys are confidential. Overall results will be reported back to the community.
PUBLIC MEETINGS: You are invited to bring your questions and comments about seniors’ housing needs, the survey and the draft project designs that will be present at public meetings in early March. Please bring your family and friends to one of the following meetings:
Silverton, Saturday March 7th at 11 am at the Memorial Hall;
New Denver on Saturday, March 7th at 2 pm at Knox Hall;
Crescent Valley Hall on Wednesday, March 11th at 7 pm;
Winlaw Hall on Thursday, March 12th at 7 pm; or the
Slocan Legion Hall on St. Patrick’s Day, Tuesday, March 17th at 5:30 p.m.
Your participation is important. Thank you! For more information, call the Slocan Valley Seniors’ Housing Society at (250) 226-7136 or email svseniorshousing@netidea.com .
Please fill out ONE SURVEY PER HOUSEHOLD ONLY.

TeckServ Internship supports rural development research
Are you a community-based organization that could use some help doing some research?
Funding is available to help organizations work with post-secondary students to undertake community-based research in the West Kootenay and Boundary regions. The annual TeckServ Internship, now in its fifth year, provides support for a Selkirk College student to engage in local community service through an applied research project designed to offer ongoing benefit to the community.
Students and community-based organizations are invited to submit proposals that address a need for applied research to support initiatives intended to create positive rural development outcomes at the local or regional scale. Submissions from organizations do not need to have a student identified, but submissions from students must be linked to a sponsoring community organization. Proposals must be submitted by March 6th and the successful applicant will be notified by mid-March.
The program is funded by Teck Trail Operations and offers up to $10,000 in financial assistance to cover student wages, supplies and travel costs. Additional support is provided by the Columbia Basin Rural Development Institute (RDI), at Selkirk College, in the form of research advisory services, office space and student supervision (if necessary), dissemination of research results, and help in matching organizational needs with student researchers.
