Viva Cacao
Viva Cacao
Say hello to Beth, an innovative and passionate craft chocolate maker and founder of Viva Cacao! Viva Cacao produces and celebrates delicious small-batch dairy-free chocolate using heirloom beans, healthy ingredients, superfoods, and ethically-sourced cacao. And they do it all from their magical chocolate factory amongst the cedars next to the Slocan River.
It’s been a big year for Beth, despite COVID. She has expanded across BC, hired two new employees, her online shop is thriving and she’s about to launch a sugar-free line. She also collaborated with Oso Negro to make a unique coffee chocolate bar and her drinking chocolate is next level tasty.
Beth feels so fortunate to have the “job” of spreading love through her chocolate and making medicine that people ingest into their bodies. Oh and also to be able to ski out her front door and see the swans on her lunch break.

Home Hardware in Winlaw
Home Hardware in Winlaw
Meet Pearl, Nancy and Haley from Home Hardware in Winlaw. Pearl is the owner of this gem in Winlaw, alongside her husband, Fred and her son, Matt. They also own and manage Four Seasons Greenhouse in Winlaw because heck...they just love serving their community. In total, they’ve been serving the Slocan Valley community for over 35 years.
Home Hardware is more than just a Home Hardware, it’s a community resource as well as a general store that provides many unique products you can’t find in other places. Fun fact: they’re also the biggest supplier of fencing in the Kootenays.
Pearl absolutely loves running the store as she believes they’re providing an important service to the community so people don’t need to travel an hour or more to get what they need. She loves providing her neighbours and customers from all over with the goods and services for their homes, yards and lives in general. She’s so grateful for her Slocan Valley community and feels whole-heartedly supported by them.

Emery Herbals in Winlaw
Emery Herbals in Winlaw
Meet Colleen, owner of Emery Herbals. For someone who helps people find their innate healing power and resiliency, it’s no wonder she’s showing her own ability to overcome. COVID-19 has forced a lot of businesses to adapt and the way Colleen has adapted her herbal dispensary, healing suites and teaching centre is nothing short of inspirational.
Colleen and her husband Ashley have never been strangers to innovation and over the last 8 months, they've taken things to a whole new level with hybrid COVID-safe in-person, live streamed workshops and classes.
Colleen and Ashley are not only bringing healing to the masses through their classes and workshops, Emery Herbals co-organizes the Canadian Herb Conference. This year, even though they had to switch to a virtual format, they raised $20,000 at this not-for-profit event in support of Canada's Herb Associations. Pretty amazing stuff.
Colleen loves running her business in the heart of Winlaw. No day is ever the same, the community is beyond supportive and business owners truly want each other to succeed. They’re all in this together, living in the wilderness, doing what they love.

Adventure Domes in New Denver
Adventure Domes in New Denver
Meet Gerald. He and his wife Abi own the one-of-a-kind Adventure Domes in New Denver. Their four eco-friendly cottages offer an experience just as unique as the Valley itself. Gerald and Abi bought the business about three years ago and are passionate about offering travellers a homebase from which to explore the three provincial parks nearby, the incredible ghost town of Sandon, Summit Ski Hill and so much more (it’s basically endless natural beauty and magic for miles….). Not to mention the Adventure Domes are just steps away from the pristine Slocan Lake.
The domes themselves look deceiving. Inside each dome is a beautifully spacious, modern and relaxing interior that has everything you need. Gerald and Ami, who used to run a hostel in Golden, love giving people a place to get away from it all and experience the natural beauty of a place far from concrete and traffic.
In these “staycation” times, the Adventure Domes is the ideal place to stay this winter if you live in the Kootenays. From snowshoeing and ski touring to x-country skiing and ice fishing, it’s the perfect home base.

Addicted to Craft in Slocan
Addicted to Craft in Slocan
Meet Milayne. She is not only addicted to crafts, it’s the name of her amazing local artisan gift shop and craft supply store in Slocan. Owning this special place has been Milayne’s dream since she was five years old, and now she has two little ones herself. In fact, she opened I'm Addicted to Craft in April of this year, a week after giving birth to her second child. She says he’s now the official mascot for her business.
She features over 40 artisans and doesn’t charge commission, just a small rental fee...so money goes directly to the artists. Milayne is also an artist herself and sells her own creations in the store (check out her Valley Life clothing and hat line...it features the epic peaks of the Valley including Frog Peak!). What she loves most about running her business is meeting people from all over who come to her shop not only to get supplies, but to get advice.
